This hook has been carved from Magnolia and has a gauge of approx 6.5mm and approx 10 - 11cm in length and finished with a light layer of varnish. It has a small hole drilled at the end that can be used to thread on beads of your choice or add to a necklace.
Please note: you will receive 1 of the hooks in the picture, chosen for you by Little Bird SOS, each are similar in form and function.
The sticks and twigs for my crochet hooks are selected during walks around woodlands or local parks. Looking for an interesting stick is quite Zen, like looking for interesting pebbles on a beach, and is a fundamental part of the making process. I always use fallen twigs, natures discards, and choose the ones with most interesting shapes, colours or textures. When I find the right twig it seems like a magic wand in my hand and I get excited before I've even started to work on it.
When I fashion a twig or stick into a crochet hook it's crucially important to me to maintain the integrity of the original shape made by nature. Conveniently many of the natural curves and twists in a twig provide a natural handle for the hook. I think I don't so much change the twig into a hook as reveal the hook that was already there! It's important that the hooks fulfil their function and 'crochet', I'm an expert at crochet and test drive each one before it's offered for sale.
I apply simple beeswax and coconut oil to preserve the condition of the wood and make it silky to the touch. The natural oils from your own busy hands will continue this process of preserving the tool, so it is important that you use your crochet hook to make lots of beautiful things!
Each hook is totally unique - exactly like the people that will use them and make an ideal gift for the crafty crochet lover in your life. All proceeds go towards Little Bird SOS' social aims, so as well as buying a unique item you are also supporting a good cause!
